HAMMOND, LaVERNE J. (NORDSTROM), 92, of Shorewood, Wis., a longtime
seasonal resident of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday (Jan. 3, 2006) in the
hospice unit of Columbia St. Mary's Hospital, Milwaukee. A visitor for
many years, she became a seasonal resident in 1997. She wrote scores of
columns for the Seniority section of the St. Petersburg Times. She was
born in Kenosha, Wis., and attended the journalism school at
Northwestern University. She was a member of Three Holy Women Catholic
Parish, Milwaukee, and the Shorewood Senior Resource Center. She was an
antique collector, an avid reader and yoga practitioner. She enjoyed
fashionable clothes. Survivors include four daughters, Joan Whipp and
Diane Kavalauskas, both of Shorewood, Margo Hammond, St. Petersburg,
and Renee Hammond, Gaithersburg, Md.; five grandchildren, Matt
Kavalauskas, Tasha Hernandez, Ryan Whipp, Sonja Whipp and Emily Whipp;
a great- grandchild, Lara Kavalauskas; and a nephew. Suminski/Weiss
